Unregistered Gas Fitter Jeopardizes Health and Safety

The HSE investigated a gas fitter for health and safety issues.  The gas fitter was found to be unregistered, but still installed and illegally serviced equipment at homes.  In fact, the fitter worked on an apartment location where tenants and the landlord could have been in serious danger.  The Wrexham court heard about the health and safety breaches determining the guilt of the gas fitter.

The court ordered the unregistered fitter to 12 months community service, 150 hours of unpaid work, and a £500 fine.  The hope is that the man will learn his lesson and not continue on this path of breaching the safety and health act.

It would have been an acceptable situation if he had obtained a registered certificate and the proper health and safety training for gas fitting, but because he did not have the proper training at the time, he was in breach of the laws.  He serviced and installed a boiler and flue in 2006.  He continued to service the boiler until 2010.  The heating system broke down and the owner of the tenancy called someone else to fix it.  This different gas engineer was registered and showed that the prior work was not correct.  There was a danger for four years at the home because the gas fitter was not registered.  It was lucky that the owner called a different company and the issues were found before any incident happened to endanger lives.
