Risk assessment training necessary in business

It cannot be said too many times that proper risk assessment, whether it is on a construction site or in an office, is imperative.  Accidents can happen almost anywhere to any employer, employee, or client.  Forgoing proper procedures for risk assessment can lead to fines such as those experienced recently by DL Group.  GKN Aerospace hired DL Group for construction work.  GKN did a basic survey and found asbestos was present in the building being remodelled.  GKN had to hire DL Group for the refurbishment; however, the company ignored the basic survey.  GKN ignored the asbestos issue and hired a company not qualified to complete the removal work.  The court learned how GKN breached safety laws.  The health and safety at work breach led to an £8,000 fine with almost £6,000 in court costs.

This case was not a simple matter of foregoing proper workstation risk assessment training.  It was a clear breach of laws by ignoring the survey and contracting a company not qualified for the work.  There is some issue of fault on DL’s side for not properly recognising asbestos and ensuring proper work safety for their employees; however, since GKN did not share the survey properly they were held accountable.

Rather than allow your company to be fined or be in a situation where a risk could harm your employees, it is better to have proper training.  Health and safety training comes in many forms such as the five courses provided by Winter and Co.  One of those courses is a risk assessment and management course designed to help you understand the laws as they apply to your business.  The course also helps you create a management plan for your company to ensure compliance with standard laws.  Taking this course could save your company a fine in the future.
