Rail Firm Guilty of Health and Safety Failures

A rail firm is fined for safety breaches after worker’s death. A worker died after suffering from a head injury due to a work related incident.  A train repair company is being held liable for the incident.  The HSE investigated the rail firm by conducting health and safety audits in order to determine if there was an issue with the firm following the worker’s death.  The worker died after being pulled towards a lathe in the 2008 incident.  He was using it to clean the train’s axle.  Unfortunately, he hit his head. His sleeve was caught in the machine.  This is what led to his head hitting the machine with enough impact to harm him.

He was found lying on his back at the facility in Springburn.  The reports from the incident said there was a “considerable” amount of blood next to him and he only had one glove on.  Railcare Limited of Milton Keynes pled guilty to the incident admitting they did not provide proper workstation risk assessments in order to guard employees against any safety issues that might exist.

The company admitted that they did not offer proper instruction, information, or supervision while their employees were working.  It was stated the method used to clean the axle was not proper and there were other methods in place that could have been used.  The worker did not have formal instruction.  This is one of the factors that led to his death.
