Personal Responsibility a Factor in Health and Safety

Companies are held to certain health and safety laws in the UK.  There is no problem with enforcing safety and health at work, but an expert has argued that it is not just the responsibility of the company to offer health and safety training to ensure employee safety at work. It is also the responsibility of each employee to understand the safety and health issues that could occur at work.

Firms do need to make it a point to train new employees and continue to retrain older employees each year on risk management issues.  Yet, the employees do need to follow the risk management protocols put in place.  This also means that a company should have a trained health and safety manager on the job.  It could be a consultant that comes in each year to conduct risk assessments and pass along the information to every employee.  It is useful for a company to have a trained professional rather than someone who is in a management position assigned the task.

It has been found in recent studies that firms are not allocating the proper funds to safety and health at the workplace.  In other words, some companies are not providing enough money towards hiring a properly trained individual who can ensure and oversee health and safety at work.  Strong action needs to be taken in every company, not only for personal responsibility over safety and health, but also to have the correctly trained person in charge.
