Nursery Fined Due to Health and Safety Issue

A horticultural nursery was fined for breach of health and safety regulations.

In Evesham, a nursery was fined due to a worker’s fall.  A worker accidentally fell through a glasshouse roof, leading to many serious injuries.  Westland Nurseries Limited in Offenham has been fined £12,000 for the breach.  They are also going to pay £6,835 due to the guilty plea they provided for the case from December 2009.

The worker fell through the glass when cleaning the gutter between the two roofs.  He was out of work for three months due to his injuries.  He had a concussion, fractured hand, and many cuts and bruises.  The Health and Safety Executive prosecuted the company stating the man was not properly trained to work at such a height.

This lack of instruction and absence of health and safety training led to the incident.  Had the young man understood the risks and how to go up on the roof properly, the incident most likely would not have occurred as it did.  Furthermore, if the company was in better communication with its workers, proper health and safety audits of workers would have been done.  In other words, risk assessment managers have to check on their employees to ensure they are following the proper procedure.  Letting a risky situation continue can lead to dangerous incidents, thus it falls not only on the employee to be properly trained but also for the managers or owners to ensure safety procedures are followed at all times.
