Man jailed for health and safety failings

A man living in Chester has been jailed for a 14-month sentence.  The sentence was issued due to lack of care.  He was warned on many occasions about the legal order against him for inspecting play equipment of the inflatable type.  Despite these warnings from the HSE that occurred after health and safety audits the man continued to do inspections of equipment and even issuing certificates.  He was also given notice not to carry out any seam repairs to an inflatable play house, but he still did so.  The man is 77 years old.

The court heard the list of issues against the man regarding health and safety.  He inspected an inflatable pool toy on July 15, 2010 and gave a safety certificate two days afterwards.  He inspected a bouncy castle a month later with a certificate given.  In total there were five incidents heard in court dating from July 2010 to August 2011 in which the man issued documents and inspected the play toys despite being warned against it.  Children were at risk for his work and conduct.  This is why it was decided a jail sentence would be better than any fine or warning; he had already been given warnings that he defied.  He has served some time already for the hearing because of bail conditions that he breached.  It seems he is unwilling to change his behaviour and it may be a necessary sentence to make certain he can learn from his mistakes.
