Lack of health and safety training leads to injury

Safety and health is a very serious matter, regardless of the job you have. In a factory setting, things can be more dangerous because of different machines and also the health and safety training given or not given.  An adhesive tape company was prosecuted due to a 19-year-old worker severing his thumb on a machine in Wellingborough.  The worker was at the factory for three weeks before the incident happened in 2010.  He was receiving health and safety training to fix a problem with one of the printing presses when his hand was pulled into the two rollers.  He was taken to a specialist at Royal Derby Hospital, but he still lost part of his thumb.  The worker was in the hospital for five days and took seven months to recover.  The injury has stopped him from quite a few of his hobbies such as boxing and fixing bicycles.

The press had a guard missing.  This means the worker was being trained with improper safety and health procedures on the machine.  The HSE cited this training and the incorrect machine as the reasons for the prosecution of safety breaches.  The court sided with the investigation, fining the company £8,000 with £14,700 in additional costs.  The young man has been changed for life because of safety failings at the company.  These failings could easily have been corrected thus keeping the man’s hand intact.
