Health and Safety Training for Asbestos Recognition

Apprentice tradesmen are being offered new training to help them better understand asbestos.  The training will include identification of asbestos and the risks associated with the substance.  Recently there have been a few cases regarding asbestos.  This is why one establishment has decided to create new health and safety training for apprentices.

Those who wish to take the free training can sign up with the HSE for the training session being held at the Dryden Centre in Low Fell.  The lecture will include trainers and employers who have worked with asbestos.  Trainees will learn how to identify the different versions of the substance they may find in old buildings.  They will also learn why the protective gear is essential to protecting them from health risks later on.

Asbestos was used for many uses in ships, buildings, and home construction.  In the 50s, it was determined that asbestos may be a health and safety risk, but there was little known about the issues it may cause.  Finally, research showed that after 10 to 30 years of exposure to asbestos, individuals could show signs of cancer and the cancer is a slow killer.  It also affects one person differently from another because it is based on health and exposure.  For example, someone who smoked could be affected more quickly than someone in better health could.  The HSE refers to asbestos as the “hidden killer.”  As a result, they have decided to start a campaign to get better training for the construction industry.
