Health and Safety Reforms Needed

ABI, or the Association of British Insurers, has asked for safety and health reform.  The insurance association has released a recent study about the lack of health and safety trainingThe discussion is not on training with machines or even proper health and safety tactics to use at work.  Instead, the association has noticed that more and more companies are being sued for minor injuries that are truly not a part of the whole concept of health and safety regulations.

Safety and health regulations exist so that companies have protocols in place to minimise the injuries, illnesses, and death that have the potential to occur on the job.  For instance, in construction working at heights can be an issue.  Companies need to provide proper protection to ensure a worker does not fall from height.  They also have to make certain their employees know how to use the protections in place and that it is for safety reasons.  A cut from a box cutter is not something to sue over or start a complaint about unless there is an underlying liability issue.

The proper use of any sharp object in the work place deserves a mention during orientation such as not to cut towards yourself, safely store the sharp point, etc.  In the case of certain aspects of workplace safety, it is also about the employees having their own guide as to what is and what is not safe.  It is basic human nature to understand that doing something could be dangerous and therefore not to continue if there is danger of injury.
