Health and safety laws reviewed

Employees have a duty of care they must follow according to safety and health at the workplace laws.  Sometimes it can be a good idea to review your health and safety training to avoid any issues with breaches at your business.  Often we read about companies and businesses that have been prosecuted by the HSE in local courts for health and safety at work breaches such as a gas fitter not being registered or a construction worker on a roof without proper safety measures.

If you are an employer, you have a duty of care to your employees.  This duty of care weighs heavier on your side than it does for the employee.  It means the employee also has to be responsible, including knowing what not to do because of the training their employer provided.  The duty of care is often going to be the information, training, instruction, and supervision that you give your employees so they can take reasonable and responsible precautions at the workplace.  Furthermore, it is up to you as the employer to see that the workplace is safe and maintained regarding entry, exit, and overall work environment.  It is up to you as the employer to conduct risk assessments and let your workers know of any issues that could be potential health and safety problems.

If you follow reasonable practises, it will encourage your employees to do so.  It can also help if there is any case against you due to a worker injury.
