Health and Safety Audit in Incident Leads to Fines

A recycling company will face fines since being found guilty of safety and health breaches at the workplace.  A young man working at the recycling company sustained injuries to his foot when a machine went over the top of it. The health and safety audits revealed issues with the systems safety operations at a Folkestone Kent location.

The machine was a 16 tonne shovel that ran over the employee’s foot while he was sorting waste at a recycling company.  He has suffered from 16 broken bones in his foot.  This has caused quite a bit of pain since the incident in 2010.  There is every chance that he will have to give up his Motocross career, in which he was racing at the national level.  There were even potential sponsorships, but with his foot injury, he has been unable to return to work or get his car license.

During the health and safety at work checks by the HSE, it was found that there was no system in place to keep the vehicles separate from pedestrians.  This was found to be the cause of the incident. It is lucky that the young man was not killed during the incident.  The HSE stated there is no reason for any lack of safety in that type of situation.  There should have been risk management protocols in place to ensure that everyone would be safe while on the site, no matter their site location.
