Health and safety audit follows gas explosion

A gas explosion occurred in Shelton. A terrace house became filled with gas.  The HSE conducted beginning health and safety audits of the home including an examination of what could have caused the explosion.  At this time what is known is the house was destroyed and that the explosion occurred because of gas and an electrical fault.  It will take some time and quite a bit of examination of health and safety issues to determine why the gas was leaking and why it ended in such an explosion.  At the moment, Northern Gas Networks said there is no issue with the local supply leading into the home, so it could be an issue of appliances or gas fitting work.

No leaks were found from the outside of the house.  This means the pipes outside were fine.  The HSE is now looking to see if the gas fitter did not conduct the work correctly.  Gas in terms of health and safety regulations requires that a gas inspector come to a home every year to inspect gas appliances such as boilers and stoves.  Gas fitters are also required to hold licences for the work they do.  There have been several issues with gas fitters over the years in the UK with improper work or licences.  Whenever there is a gas related explosion in a home or business, the health and safety executive is brought in to determine if the gas fitter had any part in the issue.
