Greater Manchester Fire Fighter Training includes Health and Safety

Greater Manchester and Lancashire fire fighters undergo training.

Training for a fire fighter is very important.  They must constantly train and keep in shape in order to conduct their jobs appropriately.  Part of this training includes health and safety courses.  These guidelines help fire fighters stay safe while rescuing others.  It is not helpful or safe for a fire fighter to be injured while helping others, given that it could mean the already injured person suffers more.  To avoid major incidents, fire fighters constantly go through health and safety training courses such as the current road crash training exercise.

For training purposes, a road crash with ten cars and three HGVs was set up.  It involved about 60 fire fighters from Lancashire and Greater Manchester.  The “accident” was set up at a recovery depot in Horwich.  Fire fighters from Wigan, Rochdale, Bolton, Chorley, and Bury were on site to deal with the rescue.  They also had Heavy Rescue Partnership testing, wherein the HGVs were lifted to get them out of the way.  The exercise included the Station Manager, NHS Hart Team, Highway Agency, and Police.

The exercise was said to be successful and the fire fighters have trained with health and safety, in addition to rescue, in mind.  The exercise included a tanker with cars trapped underneath, 12 fire engines, and two special devices to move the heavier vehicles off the other cars.  The concept was to set up the fire fighters to deal with huge incidents such as this in the event it ever happens.
