Farm Health and Safety Workshops Held in Devon, Cornwall

Approximately 60 farmers are invited to attend health and safety workshops.

There will be health and safety workshops held in Cornwall and Devon.  These workshops are for farmers and about 60 have been invited to take part in the practical training being offered.  The workshops are an effort to help reduce the number of injuries and deaths that occur on farms each year.

South West Regional Skills Programme will run the programmes.  This is a course offered by Ducky College Rural Business School.  It is a health and safety course farmers and agricultural workers go through if they attend a college.  The course is designed to be effective and practical.  It is not designed around book learning.

The event will provide several subjects, from farm machinery to working at heights.  Anything that is common around farms and agricultural industries will be discussed at the workshops including manual handling and handling of livestock.

Practical demonstrations about chemicals and working around dust are also incorporated with the training at the Devon and Cornwall farm safety conference.  Any farmers can attend as the HSE and farming industry is working to get as many UK farmers and workers educated to reduce any health and safety issues on the job.

Agriculture is one of the industries with the highest rates of death and severe injury.  Construction, oil, and gas are also among the highest with work place incidents.  The HSE is trying to change these high numbers to make all employees safer.
