Company fined for loss of worker’s Finger

A bubble wrap company has been fined.

Health and safety at work is imperative for many reasons.  Cases heard by the courts after HSE health and safety audits help make it clear why employees harmed for breaches of health and safety should be compensated and companies held liable.  A recent case was about a bubble wrap company.  The company is fined with 10,000 pounds.  A worker lost three fingers in an accident at the manufacturing company.

It was decided that the company was guilty of health and safety breaches.  The Milton Keynes Magistrates Court heard the case on Friday reaching a decision about the incident last May 18.  The worker’s hand became trapped in the equipment at the factory.  The worker was cleaning the machine of debris when his right hand was trapped in the powered rollers.  The machine was still running and a temperature was reached of over 200 degrees.

Combined with the machine’s heat and the pressure, the worker lost three fingers.  He can still work, but the work is in a much different situation because three of his fingers are missing.  The HSE stated the proper guarding was not in place to stop the machine from causing harm.  The company was issued a notice that they have since complied with.  They now have upgraded safety in place including the guards that were needed before the incident.  These machines can be very dangerous.  This is why safety measures need to be in place.
