Bradford Fire Fighters’ Health and Safety Injury Stats

Statistics regarding health and safety for Bradford fire fighters have been announced.  There is no question that fire fighters have one of the most dangerous jobs, but the statistics are rather surprising. They show that more injuries occur on day-to-day duties and training than while on a fire or crash.  Of the 64 injuries sustained in the last 12 months for the Bradford district, 30 were on incidents and 34 were during regular duties.

Burns, eye injuries, bruising at incidents, concussion, and injuries from training, fitness training, and cleaning were the causes of the incidents.  It is not surprising that injuries will occur while the fire fighter is on scene.  The results are surprising that health and safety at work issues occur during normal training and cleaning. Fortunately, the 34 incidents not related to calls were minor rather than something major.

A spokesperson stated that one of the best things about working as a fire fighter is that many are learning how to avoid injuries and accidents while on the job.  They have to deal with other safety calls at workplaces, accidents on the streets, and much more, so in general the fire fighters are more aware of risks on the job and in life than any other industry.  Sometimes injuries are a result of travelling through traffic lights on a call, and at least two were for 2011.  The number of injuries on the job has fallen in Bradford, though.
