Health and Safety Rules May Have Trapped Shopper

A shopper and her granddaughter were caught in a lift for over an hour.

A lift carrying a shopper and her granddaughter suddenly stalled while they were inside.  Staff immediately responded, but they were unable to do anything for the two trapped inside because they were not qualified as lift technicians in order to press the control button that would release the lift. This has caused quite a stir about health and safety as it is seen as a health and safety rule that blocked any staff members from hitting the control button.

The store had to call a trained technician in to hit the control release button on the elevator.  It meant the two inside had to wait for 75 minutes while the technician was called and then arrived.  The store stated the technician was brought in for the trapped individuals’ safety.  This is certainly a good thing.

Elevators in buildings can stop for a number of reasons.  It may be a simple case of hitting a control release button, such as in the shopping incident for the grandmother and granddaughter.  Yet, there are times it can be something more severe.  An untrained professional simply hitting a button could cause more harm than good.  Though it may have been uncomfortable for the two trapped inside, they are now home safe, and health and safety protocols were followed by the store.  The incident as to why the elevator stopped was examined to ensure nothing else was wrong with it.
