Manual handling training course for companies

An Essex manufacturer of granite has been sentenced for safety issues. A worker was crushed to death due to some safety failings. A stone slab of three tonnes fell onto the worker in the company’s warehouse. Martin Rice was 57 at the time of the incident when he was delivering stone and placing it in storage. The storage was an A-frame style at the Stone Company. He lowered 11 slabs of about three tonnes to the floor into the A-frame. Unfortunately, the bundle fell over and he was crushed against the wall of the building.

He was a father of four. Such an incident happened because the A-frames were not constructed, the warehouse did not have proper settings for the slabs, and there was a lack of handling the slabs with proper supervision. The worker was alone, unsupervised, and with plenty of risks around. The company has been fined for the incident. It is a matter of proper workstation risk assessment and also manual handling training. Even though he used equipment to lift the slabs it can be considered that manual handling and equipment training was needed.

It is in any company’s best interest to provide proper training for all employees. It is also essential that employers weigh the risks and ensure they have proper procedures in place. The incident may have been avoided with certain protocols in practice. Additionally, looking out for the health and safety laws would have helped in this situation with regards to building the A-frame to proper specifications for holding three tonnes of slabs.
