Waste Industry Can Improve on Health and Safety
There are certain industries that tend to be less safe than others are. Agriculture, construction, and the waste industry are considered some of the most unsafe industries in the UK. The HSE has examined incidents in the last year and conducted health and safety audits in a number of sectors. It was discovered that in the waste industry there are ten times the fatal industries than the national average. Accident rates are at least four times over the national average according to the HSE.
Part of the issue is handling awkward and large objects. This led to 33% of the accidents. Manual work represents about 75% of the incidents that have occurred in the waste industry. A spokesperson stated that operator safety is imperative when the machines are running. Health and safety training courses for the waste industry are required to make the operations safe.
There are some negative discussions concerning the waste industry. There are experts that believe the legislation for these safety and health rules are unfriendly. It is also suggested that there is a lack of incentive for the waste industry to ensure that safety and health are maintained at all times. One thing is necessary and that is for most of the companies to examine their training and safety signage to ensure there are no risks being overlooked. Company operators must insist on health and safety protocols for all workers to follow suit.
