Train Crossing Incident Sparks HSE Health and Safety Investigation

A 15-year-old teenager has died in a train incident.A young girl was hit by a train when crossing at a foot crossing.  The teenager was harmed at Johnson’s Footpath Crossing that is located in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire.  The incident occurred on Sunday.  The police stated she was dead on scene, but the incident is considered a “tragic accident” at this point.  The HSE will have to examine the incident and conduct several health and safety audits to determine if it was more than an accident.  This is not the only accident to happen at a nearby station.

The Network Rail was prosecuted over two other deaths that occurred in 2005.  The incident will certainly be examined to see if there are any health and safety breaches.  In 2005, two girls were crossing on a footpath when they were struck.  There are warning lights and alarms that warn walkers not to cross the paths.  In the 2005 incident, the train passed and the warning lights continued to sound, but the girls opened the gates and were struck by a second train coming through.  The fact that the gates could be opened was a reason that health and safety was considered violated.  The case is still being heard by the Chelmsford Magistrates Court located in Essex, so no determination has been made if it was actually the fault of the rail in this 2005 incident.  Now there may be another to add to the company’s prosecution.
