School sports day in uproar over health and safety

Health and safety officials have intervened with a school sports day.  The chief starter who will be at the London Olympics planned to fire his pistol at the races for the sports day.  The parents thought it might make their children happy to experience this event since the Olympics use such a pistol to start their auspicious races.  Unfortunately, the local council brought in safety and health officials to prevent the pistol from being used.  It was stated that the pistol would be too frightening for the young children.

The council suggested that a starting pistol recorded on an iPod could be used or a klaxon could be used.  The parents feel the council has overstepped their bounds when it comes to health and safety since the person asked has started over 25,000 races in his 36 years of experience.  The man in question was asked because he has relatives in a nearby village.  One parent stated the concept was ridiculous that any child would be afraid.  After all the noise is something very typical of a car backfire.  Furthermore, most young children are already fairly noisy so something that loud would probably not startle them at all given the noises they are used to.  Most feel the case is yet again an example of the health and safety professionals going a little too far when it comes to the regulations that currently exist for safety and health for the public.
