Residents evacuated in city centre blaze

A number of residents had to be led to safety as a fire in a bakery threatened people living above it.

Crews were called to the incident in St James Street near its junction with Princess Street in central Manchester at around 7.30am in the morning. Firefighters in breathing apparatus were tackling the fire with jets and hose reels.

The fire involved the storage area and bin compound at the back of a bakery which is on the ground floor of a four-storey multi-use building, with residential properties on the floors above.

Station manager Ben Levy said: “The fire was contained to the rear of the bakery and we evacuated residents, leading them to safety, from the three floors above and we gained access to further properties to check everyone was safe.
