One Grape Too Many Challenges Health and Safety

A bus driver has lost his job over apparent safety and health issues.  According to the information available, a 66-year-old bus driver has been fired by National Express on health and safety grounds.  The man made a statement saying he ate one grape while at the bus terminal with the bus empty just before his shift would begin.  He stated the grape was just to get a little wetness into his dry mouth.  Medication taken regularly for heart by- pass surgery the year before leaves him dry mouthed.  The man also said he was not drinking or eating when driving.  He was stationary at the terminal and for a few moments ate one grape.

The company said it was against health and safety rules to have a sip of water or a grape every hour, even if the bus was empty.  The action of him eating one grape was caught on tape with CCTV.  He was dismissed February 29th.  A spokesman for the company said they have safety and health reasons for the benefit of customers.  They have high level of care standards to ensure the customers are safe.  The company also posted warnings to drivers so that they can be aware of the safety standards and not make the same mistake.  They further stated a driver cannot remain in the company if they are not fully in control of the wheel.  According to the company, the man continued to eat after leaving the terminus or at least did not have both hands on the wheel the entire time.
