Oil Rig Leak Causes Health and Safety Concerns

Many are worried about the North Sea oil rig leak.Oil and gas sectors tend to be a target for health and safety audits.  This is not surprising, considering the industry can be one of the more dangerous for workers.  It is very easy for workers to be harmed especially for those who are on the rigs out at sea.  It is even worse when an issue erupts that could affect the health and safety of many people and animals.

There was a hairline fracture on an infield line near the North Sea.  This has caused the oil field to be temporarily closed.  There is still concern that the leak was not caught soon enough, even though work was stopped within an hour after an inspection revealed the crack.  BP is the owner of the field.  Production will remain stopped until the company is satisfied that the leak was stopped.

Unfortunately, there is some worry that oil and water has already mixed, meaning that oil could be found in the North Sea and be heading towards Scotland and the UK.  The coastguard and HSE have been notified of the leak and advised to look out for any oil that may be seen.  The WWF in Scotland is already gearing up for a potential leak in the event any oil was not caught before the leak was.  A crack is very worrying since there could be others, and it may create another oil leak such as the one at Gannet Alpha last year.
