Health and safety in the workplace at construction sites

Approximately one in three basement construction projects in London have failed safety and health spot checks.  The HSE conducts health and safety audits of companies to ensure that construction companies are adhering to the laws.  Unfortunately, these audits have revealed that some companies are not working properly.  There have been 17 sites that received 20 prohibition notices due to dangerous actions at the workplace.  About six improvement notices were also served requiring safety changes to be made.  About half of the notices given had to do with work at heights along with improper forms of support.

The construction industry tends to be one of the most dangerous industries in the UK.  It is extremely easy to ignore the safety and health regulations. In doing so, a company may find a major incident has occurred.  Winter and Co. hopes that many in the industry will take advantage of the health and safety in the workplace courses available to them.

It is not just about manual handling training courses.  These are also imperative in the construction sector.  Employers need to be trained on risk assessment, proper duty of care, and the safety and health issues that can arise working from heights, with machines, and with lifting heavy materials.

Courses available will examine the current laws and the upcoming changes.  The courses also look at how to improve health and safety, whether it is with manual handling such as how to lift without hurting one’s back or having machines in place to help with the lifting.  Given the emphasis the HSE has on the construction sector right now, it is imperative to make certain your company and employees are following all health and safety rules.  By taking a course now, you can ensure everyone is trained properly and your work will not be interrupted.
