EU Legislation Enforced for Health and Safety at Work

Workers in the UK and the rest of Europe will undergo changes in health and safety at work.

The EU has certain health and safety rules that all countries that are a part of the EU are asked to follow.  The numbers of workers killed or injured at work in the last five years has risen significantly.  This number is high enough for the EU to reinforce the health and safety at work laws.  Many of the countries are beginning to take on these new resolutions, given that 371 votes were for the new changes.  Many of the changes are going to affect the technology industry such as the area of nanomaterials.  These tend to be quite risky.

The whole concept is to protect workers and also to reduce stress at work that could create health and safety issues.  The EU is asking workers to undergo manual handling training courses in order to learn how to handle the technology.  They also want to make certain that other workers are also getting proper handling training on such things as forklifts and other devices that can lead to deaths or major injuries.  Factories with machines can be just as harmful as places working with nano-technology.

Stress at work certainly does not help the safety situation, as workers who are overstressed will tend to become distracted and thus more careless.  There may be more audits in the coming year to ensure the number of deaths and major injuries are lowered throughout the UK and Europe.
