Cornish Roofing Company Fined for Health and Safety Breach
A builder based in Redruth has been fined after he ignored a construction safety training order issued by Health and Safety Executive. 34-year-old Nathan Michell was served the Improvement Notice during June 2010 but he failed to attend appropriate courses despite arranging them on two occasions.
“Mr Michell was given two opportunities to complete a much needed safety course after the HSE visit. Unfortunately for him, ignoring the HSE enforcement notice landed him in court today,” HSE Inspector Barry Trudgian revealed.
An HSE Inspector had flagged a number of safety issues when frequenting a new housing development Mr Michell’s firm were working on in Church Road, Pool. Incomplete scaffolding, a broken ladder and a lack of important barriers, which could have prevented workers from falling, were among those noted.
“Organising safe work at height is one of the key responsibilities of those in control of construction work. In order to do this it’s essential they remain up to speed with best practice in construction and relevant health and safety law.”
The inspector went on to add that everyone who is a part of a construction project should be aware of their duties under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007.
Mr Michell from St. Day was subsequently fined £1,2000 and ordered to pay costs of £800 after he admitted to breaching Section 33 of the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act.
